Breast Augmentation Incision Options – CosmeticSurgery411.com
Breast augmentation incision options remain one of many decisions that must be made only following extensive research into this type of cosmetic surgery. There are four general entry sites to choose from, and sometimes the type of implant you prefer will dictate which site may be used. We will describe each entry site to help you determine which may be best suited for you.
Inframammary Fold
The inframammary fold is also called the crease incision because of its location underneath the natural breast crease. This breast augmentation incision site works for any of the three implant placement methods. Another advantage of this site is that in the event of any needed implant revisions, the same scar can be used. However, for women with little to no crease, this site may result in a more obvious scar. This site requires a skilled surgeon to pre-determine where the crease will be located after the implant is placed, so if you ever opted to have your implants removed, your scar will become visible again.
Areola (Nipple)
The areola, or nipple incision involves removing the areola to place the implant, then replacing it when completed. Due to the darker pigmented skin of the areola, the scar is more effectively masked, making this site one of the most commonly used. Due to the areola’s location, this method is easier for the surgeon. However, loss of nipple sensation and more post-operative pain are possible disadvantages of the areola technique. Any placement method is possible with the areola location, but the submuscular approach is more extensive and results in more surgical pain.
Transaxillary (Underarm)
This entry site involves placing the implant by way of the armpit. Since most of the time, this area is concealed, it remains a great option; in fact, the most easily obtained option for scarless breasts. Either of the placement methods works with this entry site, and it’s thought to be the safest site in reference to future breastfeeding. This technique is only available for saline implants, as they are filled after placement. Another disadvantage, besides its level of difficulty, is that it cannot be reused for revision, which would result in multiple scars.
Naval (TUBA)
The trans-umbilical breast augmentation incision option is where the surgeon feeds the implants through the naval and up into the desired area. This technique is only available for saline implants, as they must be filled after they are placed, whereas silicone implants come pre-filled. This is the only other technique that results in scarless breasts, but few cosmetic surgeons perform this method. Another disadvantage is the level of difficulty in ensuring symmetry and the inability to perform revisions from the same site.
Now that you know a little more about each of the breast augmentation incision options, you can make a more informed decision on which entry site may be best for you.
